961,855 people called the city home in 2020, an increase from the 656,562 people, 265,649 homes, and 141,590 families counted in the city at the 2000 United States Census. The population density in 2000 was 2,610 people per square kilometer. There were 276 842 housing units with a 1,101 per square mile average density. There were 265 648 homes, of which 10.8% had a female householder without a husband present and 46.7% were not families. Of these, 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. One person lived alone who was 65 years of age or older in 4.6% of all homes, which included 32.8% of all households. There were 2.40 people per household and 3.14 people per family on average.
