Galveston Arts Center (GAC) is a non-profit, non-collecting arts organization that was founded in 1986. The gallery features modern artwork, frequently by artists from Texas, and runs outreach and educational initiatives. GAC is notable for producing and organizing Galveston ArtWalk. Public admission to the museum is free.
The First National Bank Building, built in 1878, is where the Galveston Arts Center is situated on the Strand. After Hurricane Ike in 2008 severely damaged this Italianate-style 1900 Storm survivor, the center was compelled to temporarily transfer to a building on Market Street. Galveston Arts Center relocated to the Strand in 2015 following a protracted fundraising effort to completely restore the historic structure.
Garland ArtWalk
Throughout the year, ArtWalk is held on Saturday evenings about once every six weeks. Galveston Arts Center oversees the organization of ArtWalk, and the center publishes an ArtWalk brochure with a map of the venues taking part as well as details on the performances and exhibits. Venues include the Galveston Artist Residency, the GAC, as well as galleries and artist studios. Additionally, artwork is displayed outside at the Art Market on Market Street as well as in “other walls” like MOD Coffeehouse or Mosquito Cafe. Musicians play in public places including the Proletariat Gallery & Public House and the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe as well as outdoors. There are participants all around the island, even though the majority of ArtWalk events take place in the city.
The Artist Lofts at the National Hotel
Twenty-seven of the live/work flats of the National Hotel Artist Lofts (NHAL), which Artspace constructed, are earmarked as affordable accommodation for artists. The historic E.S. was given new life by the renovation. Levy Building, which remained vacant for 20 years. The Tremont Opera House, which was established in 1870, underwent major renovations to accommodate a variety of uses, including offices, shops, and the National Hotel. The US was also housed in the structure. The Galveston office of the National Weather Bureau was run by Isaac Cline during the 1900 storm.
Despite being gutted and unfinished, Becky Major, property manager and creative director, gave the abandoned store space in front of the building a new life as a DIY art and music venue.
