Mayor Broiles and County Attorney R. L. Carlock started a reform movement in the late 1880s. On February 8, 1887, Luke Short, who proclaimed himself the “King of Fort Worth Gamblers,” shot and killed Jim Courtright on Main Street. Since Courtright had been well-liked, when Short was incarcerated for his death, rumors of a lynching surfaced. In order to defend Short, his close buddy Bat Masterson arrived armed and spent the night in his jail.

In 1911, the Reverend J. Frank Norris attacked racetrack gambling in the Baptist Standard and denounced vice and prostitution from the pulpit of the First Baptist Church of Fort Worth. The conflict intensified when he started connecting specific Fort Worth businesspeople with properties in the Acre and named them from his pulpit. On February 4, 1912, Norris’ church was completely destroyed by fire. That same evening, however, one of his adversaries threw a bundle of burning, oily rags onto his porch, but the fire was quickly put out and only caused little damage. The parsonage was successfully burned down by the arsonists a month later. Norris was charged with perjury and arson in connection with the two fires in a dramatic trial that lasted a month. The Geography of Fort Worth is diverse and includes both hills and prairies. The Trinity River runs through the city, providing recreational opportunities such as fishing and boating.

 

The whites-only union employees at the Niles City Stockyards meatpacking plant owned by Fort Worth, Swift & Co. went on strike in 1921. The proprietors made an effort to swap them out for black strikebreakers. African-American strikebreaker Fred Rouse was hung on a tree at the intersection of NE 12th Street and Samuels Avenue during labor protests. A white mob shot his dismembered body with weapons after he was hanged.

When an F3 tornado slammed downtown Fort Worth on March 28, 2000, at 6:15 p.m., several of the structures were seriously damaged. The Bank One Tower, which was a prominent component of the Fort Worth skyline and contained the well-known restaurant Reata on its top level, was one of the worst-hit buildings.

The mayor of Fort Worth declared the city’s continuous growth to be 20.78% in 2020. The beginning of the city’s diversification from 2014 to 2018 was also highlighted by the Census Bureau.
Many African Americans have recently moved to Fort Worth in addition to the reverse migration because of the city’s low cost of living and job opportunities.
On February 11, 2021, 133 vehicles and trucks collided on I-35W as a result of freezing rain that had left ice. At least six people were killed and many others were hurt in the collision.
