San Antonio is a well-liked vacation spot. Texas’ #1 tourist destination is the Downtown San Antonio Alamo Mission (“The Alamo“). Due to the mission, San Antonio is frequently referred to as “Alamo City”.
The second-most popular attraction in the city is the River Walk, which runs through Downtown, earning it the extra moniker “River City”. The landscaped walking and biking path follows the San Antonio River for 13 additional miles between 2009 and 2013, extending from the “Museum Reach” beginning in Brackenridge Park through the “Downtown Reach” past the Blue Star’s “Eagleland” to the “Mission Reach” ending near Loop 410 South past Mission Espada.
San Fernando Cathedral, The Majestic Theatre, Hemisfair (home of the Tower of the Americas and UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures), La Villita, Market Square, the Spanish Governor’s Palace, and the venerable Menger Hotel are further attractions in the Downtown region. The Fairmount Hotel, San Antonio’s second-oldest hotel and one of the heaviest structures ever relocated intact, is listed in the Guinness World Records. It was erected in 1906. It took four days and $650,000 to transfer it to its current location, three blocks south of the Alamo.
Four Fortune 500 firms have their corporate offices in San Antonio: Valero Energy, USAA, iHeartMedia, and NuStar Energy. San Antonio serves as the home base for H-E-B, the 13th-largest private firm in the United States.
Bill Miller Bar-B-Q Enterprises, Carenet Health, Frost Bank, Visionworks of America, Harte-Hanks, Kinetic Concepts, SWBC, NewTek, Rackspace, Pabst Brewing Company, Taco Cabana, Broadway Bank, Zachry Holdings/Zachry Construction Company, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, SAS, Globalscape, and Whataburger are among the businesses with headquarters in the city. San Antonio is also home to the North American Development Bank, a development finance organization jointly owned by the governments of the United States and Mexico. Hulu, Capital Group, CGI, Kaco New Energy, and Marathon Petroleum are a few other well-known businesses with large local operations.
With the largest being the relocation of AT&T Inc. from San Antonio to Dallas in 2008 “to better serve customers and expand business in the future,” San Antonio has lost several significant company headquarters. In 2019, Andeavor (Formerly Tesoro) was acquired by Marathon Petroleum; this merger eliminated the company and the headquarters were moved to Findlay, Ohio. Titan Holdings and USLD Communications had sold their businesses to bigger organizations in 1997. Builders Square’s operations were transferred out of San Antonio following the company’s acquisition by a Los Angeles buyout specialist.
The area has earned the moniker “Military City, USA” since it is home to one of the country’s highest concentrations of military installations. Lackland Air Force Base, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Randolph are just a few of the city’s operational military facilities.
