Eastern State Penitentiary, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a historic prison that has been abandoned since 1971. Built in the early 1800s, Eastern State was one of the first prisons to implement a system of solitary confinement as a form of punishment. The prison was designed to be an experiment in rehabilitation and reform for inmates. Each cell at Eastern State was designed to be self-contained with running water and a toilet. It also bears an inscription that reads “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof,” which has been interpreted to represent various causes over time.
