Foreign immigration has contributed to the city’s demographic rise in addition to its economic expansion. The foreign-born population of the city increased by 69% between 2000 and 2016 to make up nearly 20% of Philadelphia’s workforce, and it doubled between 1990 and 2017 to make up 13.8% of the city’s total population, according to research by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Port Richmond is a hub for the Polish-American neighborhood in Philadelphia and is still a popular place for Polish immigrants to settle. Despite being known for its Irish and Irish-American residents, Northeast Philadelphia also has significant Jewish and Russian populations. There is a Jewish community in Mount Airy, northwest of Philadelphia. Historical records indicate that the nearby Anglo-Saxon Protestant settlement of Chestnut Hill.
