The first U.S. Census for Tampa was taken in 1850, when it had a total population of 974, including soldiers stationed at Fort Brooke. In 1860, Tampa did not submit a separate report.
In the year 2000, German (9.2%), Irish (8.4%), English (7.7%), Italian (5.6%), and French (2.4%) were the most prevalent European ancestries in the city.
There were 157,130 households as of 2010, with 13.5% of them being empty. In 2000, 16.1% of homes were headed by women without husbands, while 42.9% of households did not include any children under the age of 18, married couples, or married individuals living together. One person lived alone who was 65 years of age or older in 10.2% of all homes, which included 33.7% of all households.

It was 34.7 years old on average. There were 95.3 men for every 100 females. There were 92.1 males for every 100 females that were at least 18 years old. In 2006, the city’s typical household income was $39,602 and the median family income was $45,823. The median salary for men was $40,461 compared to $29,868 for women. The city’s per capita income was $26,522. 16.4% of families and 20.1% of the population were living in poverty.
